Was Okonkwo a real hero? If yes, what Kind of heros was he?

Okonkwo was a lost hero. Though he was the bravest man that his community could ever have at that time, he was not able to understand that action and thought must go together. I appreciated so much the fact that Chinua Achebe taught us about Ibo culture and customs in Things Fall Apart, but the negative aspects about this culture sometimes make it difficult for us to see Ibo culture objectively, but there is one thing that I’m sure of- if customs and beliefs are made to destroy us, then we should not give them much importance, even if this will lead others, (whoever they might be parents, children, relatives or friends) to loath us.

The Lost Hero

Okonkwo was his name,

Strength was his symbol,

Courage gave him fame,

And hero was his title.

He loved courage.

He hated cowardness.

Always filled with rage,

Okonkwo lacked gentleness

The life he led,

The success he achieved,

The greatness he had,

All these were his deeds.

Okonkwo struggled with life,

And brave he was.

Relying only on himself,

Wherever he was.

Okonkwo was a stubborn

Who killed his son Ikemefouna.

Between Umuofia and himself he was torn,

Okonkwo nevertheless still believed in Umunna

When the white man stepped on his land,

Evil power didn’t scare Okonkwo.

Okonkwo abandoned what was in his hands,

And only Okonkwo could kill Okonkwo.
