To beg off is to decline an invitaion

Example: When he invited me to his birthday party I said I would come, unfortunately
I fell ill so I begged off.

Well, learning phrasal verbs out of the dictionary can help, but students really need to read and hear phrasal verbs in context for them to be able to truly understand the correct usage of phrasal verbs...
