   Dear sir or madam,

  1. I am confused using the definite article "the" with indefinite pronoun "all". Can you give me explanations when to use "the" with all?
  2. I can't find any differences between "none" and "neither" in the following sentences.
    a) My parents played the piano, but none of them could read music. (they say that "none" is incorrect and "neither" is correct. why?)
     b)All of us played the piano, but neither of us could read music.(they say that "neither" is incorrect and "none" is correct. why?)
3. can we use "neither" with singular verb as well as plural one?
sincerely Mziko

1- Could you provide us with examples, please! Are you talking about the case where we get to use "all"+"the" as in "All the kids went to bed." ?

2-They are both correct!

e.g. Do you want some tea or coffee?
      --> None!
or   --> Neither.   ( Originally: neither tea nor coffee)
      Is you hair long or short?
      --> Neither.
"All of us" may refer to a group of people (more than two) --> It is incorrect to use "neither"

3- Singular / Plural verbs? Sorry, I don't understand!

"None"is used with mass nouns like air or water or love, whereas "neither" is used when there is a choice of two individual nouns -- i.e. things that can be counted.

          But I thought "none" could be used with both count &  mass nouns:

            e.g. He left none of the cake. (Not Any)
                  None of the students understood the lesson. (Not One - No One - Nobody)
                  It is none of your business! (Not Part)

          Not to mention the difference between "none" as a pronoun, "none" as an adjective, and "none" as an adverb.
